With the incredible demand for rooms, the 2010 Soccer World Cup created a lot of awareness around the hotel and hospitality industries. All around the country, people were building high-rises and organising township tours, puffing pillows and sprucing up everything from decor and menus to top class service worthy of the phrase “warm African hospitality”. TV shows like Masterchef and the ever-growing following of famous chefs like Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson further fuelled the flames of interest in the trade.
The buzz ignited a lot of notice from people who wanted to know more about entering the business; the necessary qualifications needed and places where the qualifications could be attained. Unfortunately, to Southern Cape students and prospective students, the Garden Route is like the sleeping partner of the Western Cape when it comes to being on the fast track to a vast array of educational opportunities.
But the secret to becoming a success in any industry is to strike while the iron is hot – or in this case the frying pan. Opportunity knocked and François Ferreira opened the door. The François Ferreira Academy is a school for culinary and hospitality artisans to hone their various crafts and is undoubtedly a Southern Cape institute for training excellence, culinary quality and ultimately, creative flair.
